Whooping Cough – Pertussis

There has been a dramatic surge in cases of Whooping cough (Pertussis) in recent months.
It causes a prolonged/frustrating cough in adults but has a more sinister illness in newborns who are more likely to have complications including Pneumonia.
While not only related to travel, it is a timely reminder how important it is to have Pertussis boosters before heading overseas. Not only does it prevent illness in the individual while away, but protects close family members on return.
Pertussis comes in a vaccine combined with Tetanus and Diphtheria (DTP). Tetanus is also important to have before travel, avoiding the need to have boosters overseas in the event of cuts or scratches.
DTP vaccines generally last for 10 years but is recommended in each pregnancy to help protect newborns before they can have the vaccine themselves at 6 weeks of age.
The vaccine is inexpensive, safe and effective, long lasting with local discomfort for 24 hrs being the main side effect.
